**Course Review: Introduction to Amibroker & AFL (Amibroker Formula Language) on Coursera** If you are a beginner trader looking to step into the world of systematic trading or want to transition from discretionary trading to a more disciplined approach, the "Introduction to Amibroker & AFL" course on Coursera is an excellent choice. Designed specifically for newcomers, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to using Amibroker software and its scripting language, AFL (Amibroker Formula Language), in trading. **Overview and Content** This course addresses the critical issue faced by retail traders: the high failure rate — over 95% according to past studies — largely due to emotional biases like fear and greed. Systematic trading, where trade entries, exits, and profit/loss management are predefined, seeks to mitigate these emotional pitfalls. By focusing on rules-based trading methods, the course empowers traders to take more disciplined and less emotional trading decisions. The course emphasizes practical skills, particularly in managing data and handling stocks with splits and mergers using Amibroker. Importantly, it starts from scratch, assuming no prior programming or AFL knowledge. It begins with fundamental programming concepts, gradually building up to more advanced topics such as array handling in AFL and understanding the underlying mechanics of the software. **Strengths** - **Beginner-Friendly Approach:** Designed for traders with no programming experience, making it accessible for those just starting out. - **Practical Focus:** Learns how to operate Amibroker efficiently, including database handling, stock classifications, and managing corporate actions. - **Cost-Effective:** The course allows for application using the trial version of Amibroker, removing the need for costly licensed software. - **Market Relevance:** Provides insights into how systematic trading can reduce emotional decision-making, potentially leading to more consistent results. **Limitations** - **Lack of Detailed Syllabus:** The course content is not explicitly outlined, which might leave some learners curious about specific modules. - **Advanced Topics:** While it is perfect for beginners, traders seeking advanced AFL strategies might need additional resources. **Would I recommend this course?** Absolutely. For traders new to programming or automation, this course offers a solid foundation in Amibroker and AFL, enabling them to create and test basic trading systems. Its emphasis on simplicity and practical application makes it especially appealing to retail traders eager to adopt more disciplined trading methodologies. **Final Verdict** If you're looking to start your journey into systematic trading with a user-friendly, comprehensive introduction, "Introduction to Amibroker & AFL" on Coursera is highly recommended. It’s an affordable, accessible way to learn essential skills that can significantly improve your trading discipline and performance. --- **Pros:** - Beginner-friendly - Practical and hands-on - No prior programming needed - Cost-effective (trial version use) **Cons:** - Lacks detailed syllabus overview - Basic level (may need additional courses for advanced AFL strategies) **Overall, this course is a highly valuable resource for new traders eager to leverage automation and scripting for smarter, less emotional trading.**
