Overview

Who Do You Think You Are?As a Christian, that question shapes how we approach everything in life - problems, opportunities, conflict, relationships, and more. Our sense of identity influences whether we live in confidence or with shame and insecurity. For the person who follows Jesus, we have been given a very specific identity found in Jesus himself. As Dr. Craig Barnes once wrote, many of us spend far too much time trying to become something we are not instead of just being who we already are. That's why this course is focused on who we are - the identity markers of a Christian. In particular, we will focus on eight specific attributes:I am Loved - Whether they admit it or not, everyone wants to be loved (though it's true some are harder to love than others). The good news is that we are loved - by the one who created us.I am Cherished - We are God's prize possession. Nothing else that he has created comes close to you. He does not see as disposable material, to be thrown away when no longer needed or useful. Instead, we occupy a special place in the heart of God.I am Redeemed - God did not settle for you; he died for you. The idea of redemption has built into the idea of buying something back that once belonged to you. God created us for his glory, Satan and our disobedience derailed it, and now through Jesus God has done what is necessary to restore the relationship.I am Included - Because of what Jesus did on the cross, we are no longer on the outside looking in (no longer foreigners, aliens, and strangers). We have been included in the family of God, co-heirs with Christ. If you are a Christian, you belong in the church.I am Forgiven - Often times God forgives us before we forgive ourselves. When we allow ourselves to experience God's forgiveness, we experience true freedom. This is freedom from our guilt and shame, as well as being released from the weight of our sins.I am Alive - No longer in darkness, God has brought us into his kingdom of light. Though we were once dead in our sins and transgressions, we are now alive through the work of Jesus on the cross. This new life is not only in eternity but also in the here and now.I am not Alone - Even though we are surrounded by crowds of people, it is easy to feel alone. Jesus promised to not leave us as orphans. He promised to be with us to the very end, to never leave us or forsake us. In addition, he gave the Holy Spirit to be our comforter, teacher, and guide. We also have the love and support of our fellow brothers and sisters.I am a Saint - You can become a saint without having to be dead first. A key part of our new identity is the idea that we have been set apart for God's purposes. We are no longer our own. Jesus lives inside of us and we live for him.Mixing teaching with personal stories, this course will encourage, inspire, and challenge every person to live the life God has designed for them. Each lesson draws wisdom from a Bible passage and applies it to your life in practical ways.Ken Hensley has been a pastor for nearly 30 years in non-denominational churches and has served as a college professor at two different colleges.
