Overview

This introduction of the Khoikhoi language is for those with little or no exposure to this First nation language of Southern Africa. Today this language, the mamas gowas or mother tongue of Sara Baartman, one of the most iconic and known African woman, a language also known as Nama/Damara or Khoekhoegowab, is spoken in parts of the Northern Cape and Namibia. This course also encourages active language reclamation and shares some knowledge on how this happens across the world as the preservation and protection of this orgin language is not only critical to Khoikhoi people in South Africa, who through hundreds of years of anti-Khoikhoi policies and laws were left without our own African tongue, disconnected from these lands and Africa, but also for South Africans who are often unaware that some of the most used South African words like nai and dagga are of Khoikhoi origin. We as Khoikhoi people especially in South Africa believed that our own language was no more. African languages in South Africa are yet to introduce the language as part of a degree programme and whilst we wait for our language to be made an official South African language, whilst we wait for a recognition of the historical colonial violence on Khoi nam or tongue, we present to you this basic course.
