Overview

The Basics of Formatting: an Introduction to Chicago Style is just that. It is a basic overview and introduction to how to correctly format an academic paper using Chicago Style guidelines in either Microsoft Word or in Google Docs. By the end of this course students should be able to correctly format not only the main body of the paper but also the heading and the works cited page in either Microsoft Word or Google Docs. This course will provide step-by-step instructions on how to double check the margins, include page numbers and the appropriate heading. In addition it also goes over the guidelines for titles and section headings before covering the different types of citations most commonly seen in student papers: websites, books, and academic articles. While this course obviously does not cover everything and it does not go in-depth it does provide enough of the basics for most student, especially undergraduate level, academic papers. Some of the only things this course does not cover are some of the more difficult and convoluted citations and the in-depth coverage of how to correctly format things like abbreviations or numbers in the body of the paper. This course covers basically everything the average undergraduate will need to know in order to correctly format an academic paper using Chicago Style.
