Overview

Assertiveness is an important step towards control over one's own life and towards the building of positive relationships with others. The goal of Assertiveness Communication Training is to enable participants to learn to express their rights, requests, opinions, and feelings honestly, directly, and appropriately without violating the rights and self-esteem of others.Assertiveness skills include expressing and accepting personal rights and responsibilities, making direct requests and refusals, determining limitations, reinforcing verbal messages with non-verbal ones, giving and receiving praise, expressing disagreement and anger, and confronting others. These skills contribute to an employee's ability to succeed in attaining personal and career goals. Positive and complete interpersonal communication skills must involve direct and honest expression of one's needs, feelings, and opinions without threatening others.An assertive person is a strong advocate for their rights and the rights of others but avoids embodying abrasive qualities, such as aggression, cockiness, and ego. Instead, assertiveness typically expresses itself as calm positivity as an individual strives to achieve a goal that can benefit themselves or others. Therefore, assertiveness training is useful to those who have difficulty standing up for themselves, and struggle with conveying their point of view.
