Introduction

# Course Review: Ecosystems of California ## Overview The "Ecosystems of California" course offered on Coursera presents an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in understanding the rich and diverse ecosystems within the Golden State. California is known for its famous landscapes—from coastal areas to mountain ranges and deserts. This course surveys the intricate relationships in these ecosystems, diving into their structures, functions, and the critical ways human activities have shaped them over time. Participants will engage with a variety of topics that are instrumental to comprehending California's ecology. From the driving forces that create statewide patterns—such as climate, soils, and land use history—to the human and ecological prehistory, learners will gain a holistic understanding of how these factors interplay within different environments. ## Course Syllabus The course is structured into several key modules, each focusing on distinct ecosystems and the factors influencing them: 1. **Drivers of Statewide Patterns** - This module sets the stage by introducing the primary drivers of ecosystems across California, providing critical insight into how elements like climate change, historical land use, and soil composition shape ecological outcomes. 2. **Marine Systems** - Here, the focus shifts to California's abundant marine environments. Learners will explore coastal ecosystems, the significant species that inhabit them, and the impact of human activities like fishing and pollution on these delicate systems. 3. **Mountains, Lakes, & Deserts** - This module covers California’s iconic Sierra Nevada and desert landscapes, discussing how altitude, temperature, and precipitation affect biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics. 4. **Lowland Systems** - The course then examines California’s valleys and plains. This section highlights issues such as agriculture's role in ecosystem management, water resource usage, and urbanization's impact. 5. **Conclusion** - The course wraps up with a summary of the topics covered, promoting a reflective understanding of the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the importance of sustainability and stewardship. ## Course Experience The course features a mix of multimedia resources, including video lectures, readings, and interactive quizzes that keep learning engaging and informative. The instructors are knowledgeable professionals in the field who present the information in an accessible manner, making complex ecological concepts understandable for learners at all levels. Moreover, the course emphasizes practical applications of ecological theory, encouraging participants to think critically about how they can contribute to ecosystem stewardship. Through project-based assessments, learners can apply concepts to real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding and connection to the content. ## Recommendation I highly recommend the "Ecosystems of California" course to anyone interested in environmental science, ecology, or conservation. Whether you are a student, a professional in the environmental field, or merely a curious individual, this course offers valuable insights into how ecosystems function and thrive, particularly in a state as ecologically diverse as California. If you are looking to deepen your knowledge of ecology while considering the significant impact of human actions on the environment, this course is for you. Engaging with the content will not only enrich your understanding, but also empower you to make informed decisions regarding environmental stewardship. Final test was harder and more specific than expected. If the question has more than one answer, it really needs to say "Mark all that apply".

I learned so much in this class! Erika Zavaleta's video field trips and lectures taught me so much about the place I live in, and it's amazing that it can all be accessed for free!

INTERESTING AND ENJOYABLE COURSE. TIMELY, TOO, AS I PLAN ON DOING THE PACIFIC COAST TRAIL THIS SPRING. THANKS SO MUCH!

Really interesting and easy to apply to your natural surroundings if you live in California. I really enjoyed the videos, and learned a ton!

This shows California outdoors from top to bottom. Really good info on all the plants, animals and outdoor environments. Especially enjoyed week 3 on lakes and deserts
